Who’s Culture Is It Anyway?

Who’s culture is it anyway? Well, in a sense anything that goes on in America is part of our culture however without other nations assisting us, we wouldn’t have much of one. The passage describes what American culture truly is. The passage doesn’t really connect with me because it seems to ramble about American culture in a very confusing manner but perhaps it is written as such to beat around the bush. I say this because without our multi-colored nation we would be on a very steep downward slope. The reason why America is so successful is because other nations have created it to be as such. American true native culture lies only within that of Native Americans. Europeans took over and changed the entire persona on an American. I feel like Americans take credit for their great nation and people but discredit or do not even acknowledge the other countries that puts money into this American culture. I’m sorry but America does not have much individual culture as it does an inner networking culture. America can not credit themselves based on their personal culture because it really is not American born Americans that are making up the majority of American culture.

American Dream Boat

This passage representing the life of K. Oanh Ha was well written and really tells the story of how difficult it is to adjust to a brand new culture. The reading describes her coming to America at the age of six in a boat from Vietnam. I related so strongly to this reading in so many ways, although I never came directly off of a boat, my parents did re locate to better my life. As a young child it was very hard for me to adjust because I was confused more than anything. I wanted to be American because thats all I saw around me. I wanted to talk walk and act like a full blood. Since I was young my parents and I would get into countless arguments about who I am, or what country was better. I considered myself American because I was born here. I did not want to even acknowledge my roots as an Indian. Over the years I started to understand that theres no shame in representing your roots. When I look in the mirror its easily noticeable that I am in fact Indian. However I still strongly believe that my home country is America that it is. However, I now recently have wanted to understand and learn more about my native culture that I have so long despised off because it was different. I am no longer ashamed of being Indian as I was but the struggles and arguments that I have had with my parents are so similar to that of K. Oanh Ha in the passage. This one related to me a lot. Loved it!

The Obligation To Endure

The passage written by Rachel Carson illustrates the importance of all living animals in our enviornment as part of our circle of life. This includes insects. I personally despise of insects, it’s a personal thing, but the passage has a valid point. If we kill the insects at the rate that we are perhaps one day it will destroy the circle of life and we may be held liable for our actions. When we spray chemicals to help eliminate insects in farmland we actually are spraying several chemicals into the air causing many illness and harmful products that eventually spread and reach human civilization. The passage talks also about plants. Destroying trees, plants, animals anything that is natural to our environment could possibly harm us in the future. Everything is created to balance everything out. I highly believe in this theory. Rain is used to balance out drought just as perhaps earthquakes or natural disasters are to balance out the unbalance in lives brought into this world. Perhaps then so are insects, animals and such. This passage was quite interesting and created a very different outlook on the reasoning behind all beings of life.

AIDS In Africa

Aids, the word itself just makes me cringe as it should you. One of the most feared diseases the world has every faced just as it should be. The place this disease is the most known to exist is Africa. I am sick and tired of hearing every major disease or disorder or poverty always link back to Africa. Why is this? Katz’s article described many significant explanations as to why this is so. Women in Africa in some cases need to exchange sex for materialistic goods needed to survive. How horrible is that? In addition to all this, When health care practically does not exist and HIV tests are unfordable how could a woman differentiate between a clean male and an infected one, They can’t! Could we fix this problem, probably not. However we could halt the spread of this disease by attacking the roots of the problem. Education for what AIDS is and schooling teaching diseases is crucial for woman and young children to understand so they can make logical decisions as they get older. In addition attacking poverty will ultimetally provide a domino affect on most problems faced in Africa. Problem is corruption of money distribution and fighting between common folks when money is so scarce. This is why I believe UN agencies or agencies from developed nations across the world should send troops and/or organizations to establish themselves in international territories that need help to monitor and help those in need providing education as well as donations and better living styles instead of sending several thousand troops to war send them to help the poor in countries that cry for our help but have very little to provide in return. If anything provide free STD tests to at lease recognize those with the disease. Africa can not necessarily provide America with oil but it can provide America with millions of smiles and healthier children. AIDS is a horrible disease but with the lack of education Africa is going to always expand its infections of AIDS and the battle to stop it will never end.

Life on the Global Assembly Line

The passage explains cheap labor that third world nations direct upon all woman young and old. The passage provides different stories about third world assembly lines with mothers and sisters making products at a rapid rate and receiving absolutely nothing in return but some 3 to 5 dollars an hour. In some 3 to 5 dollars in a day. Imagine living in an all woman dormitory like a lab rat told to work, eat, and sleep every day of your life. How unjust and ridiculous is that. The saddest part is, our great nation does very little to prevent it because American corporations partake in this business. It is horrible that our government does not enforce stricter rules about this unmoral act that America has partnered in. We must stop this today. Our title of helping is starting to demise and our credibility is starting to diminish because we are just like Alex Rodriquez and the Yankees simply playing to make more money than to do what America should be doing, and that’s doing whats right for the world. Children and Woman are working with the poorest of conditions causing several health problems that very easily could be connected to death and many other diseases. Without unions and health administrations enforcing standards of work there will never be justice. Imagine working at a US McDonalds or a Burger King making 3 dollars and hour and told to live in a dormitory, to work, to eat, and sleep every day five days a week. How messed up does that sound. America seems to help nations in need for collateral and then establish their help in donations and such using the media to create this “we help everybody” reputation when in reality we hurt people just as equal. We help and hurt, We save and kill. Think of it like its simple math. We donate money to Africa for example +1 but we allow unmoral American corporations to establish firms to create sweatshops with 7 year old kids working -1, We fight terrorism in Middle Eastern nations to provide democracy and eliminate dictatorships +1, Yet we kill several innocents, miss treat Muslims, and make underground oil trades -1. The point is we’re going no where. Doesn’t sound appealing does it. Unions need to be internationally recognized and carried over domestically and internationally to help create better work living styles and safer environments for those in poor nations. Our living standards will probably always be better than some nations but that gives us no right to use other nations so that we benefit so greatly. Corporations don’t care about other countries lifestyles as long as American’s and their business is living comfortably. That is unmoral and we as common people must come together to help stop this evil act by establishing and promoting unions and establishment intended to do nothing but make sure that business is done with some restrictions and lifestyles are livable in international nations.

AFRICAN GUEST SPEAKERS…analysis

The guest speakers from Africa were extremely interesting. The cultural difference between Africans and Americans is perhaps the largest difference imaginable. From food to entertainment Africa’s rich country differs greatly from America. Of course their lifestyle is far inferior economically culturally in many ways I feel as if it is stronger. I also now understand greatly why it is that African’s are worse off then other countries. Europeans took control and stripped Africa of its once rich country.

Africa is an interesting country that I really got to understand a little better. Each speaker showed of many similarities as well as differences that lay between single African countries. It is shocking to see how little we Americans really know and understand about Africans. I wish to learn more and seek additional information about Africa and hope one day perhaps touring the country and its rich history.

1. How does Africa partake in globalization, what companies origionate in Africa and what company goods from America are distributed and used in Africa.

2. Is Africa’s living style as bad as the news and media represent it.

3. What kind of terror roams Africa, and is their a solid law inforcement and or military to help defend Africa’s borders and internal affairs.

4. What is the common entertainment that kids associate themselves with, and do Africans how different or similar is entertainment in Africa compared to that of America.

1. Anti-racist view on the world a neutral perspective, evaluate decisions without any stereotypical views on others, Fairness to all people.

2. Leadership and a role-model, someone that I am proud to be our countries leader and someone that We as Americans can look up to.

3. Experienced, I want a president that can back up plans and stragegies with education and/or experience, People trust people who are experienced over one that is not.

ISSUES

1. Relations with other countries, we as Americans have to revive our once great repuation with the world, or it could end to our demise

2. Domestic Problems concerning healthcare, poverty, and drugs. We must stop our problems in our own country or our government simply is not doing their job.

3. Engergy sources to replicate gasoline, our dependence on a foreign good keeps us from provailing, and is by far our largest economic problem.

4. Education, We need to make sure that our inner city kids that do not recieve good education have an opportunity to recieve one, better equipment and schools for those who do not recieve much revenue by the town is a necessity in not only solving poverty in inner cities but providing a smarter generation that may help reduce the size of our uneducated inner-city population
